4 Tips To Help Driver's Avoid Rock Chips And Other Windshield Damage

Blog

Rock chips and cracks in the windshield are potentially serious issues that happen to vehicle owners all too often. While it is impossible to completely avoid this type of glass damage, there are some proactive choices drivers can make that can help limit the frequency and severity of this type of glass damage.

1. Choose routes to avoid road construction when possible

Sometimes the simple act of adjusting your route can reduce the risk of having a rock chip or windshield crack occur, especially if doing so allows you to avoid areas of road construction. While this is not always possible, such as when you must use certain roads in order to arrive at your destination, many state highway departments regularly make information about planned road repair and construction work zones sites available to the public.

2. Avoid tailgating behavior when driving

Most rock chips are caused by debris flung from under the wheels of another vehicle that then impacts the windshield of cars behind or beside them. Simply remembering to keep several car lengths between you and the vehicles in front of you can help prevent this type of debris from striking and damaging your vehicle's glass or other surfaces.

3. Be alert for larger vehicles

Larger vehicles often pose a much greater threat of causing rock chips and glass damage to other cars than standard passenger vehicles. This happens for two reasons. One, the larger vehicles usually have larger diameter tires with deeper tread designs that are capable of flinging gravel and debris further than those on the typical passenger car.

Secondly, even though these larger vehicles are required to be outfitted with protective flaps behind their tires, these flaps may be damaged or missing, leaving the cars traveling behind in greater danger of incurring rock chips and other glass damage. Staying alert for these vehicles and changing lanes to avoid traveling directly behind them is always the best plan.

4. Avoid risky methods of thawing your vehicle's windshield

Thawing ice-covered windshields through risky methods can result in the formation of cracks in the car's windshield. No matter how much of a hurry you may be in, it is important to use only approved scrapers and methods and avoid risky ice removal tactics, such as attempting to thaw a frozen windshield by pouring hot liquids on it.

When a rock chip or crack does occur, remember to schedule it for repair immediately with your trusted mobile windshield repair services.

Fixing My Car Without Ruining My Schedule

I am an exceptionally busy person who doesn't have a lot of time for smaller tasks, which is why I started focusing more carefully on maximizing my time a few years ago. I realized that I didn't have a lot of time to take care of car repairs, so I started looking for ways to streamline my schedule. I was able to work with a few different businesses that offered mobile repair, including a place that would come out to fix my windshield while I was at work. They were really easy to work with, and before I knew it, they had things completely repaired. Check out this blog for more information.
